Reading in Place, An Earth Day Celebration
April 24 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Pastoral Poetry in the Pasture: Maurice Manning’s Bucolics
2:00 – 4:30pm ET The Berry Center Farm in Henry County, Kentucky
6:30 – 7:30pm ET Agrarian Voices: Bucolics Project Concert & Poetry Reading* (more details coming soon!)
Celebrate Earth Day at The Berry Center’s farm with a pitch perfect collection of pastoral poetry. In the field and in the barn, we’ll read selected poems from the collection. We’ll practice the language arts of the commonplace, and we’ll reflect on connections between land, creatures, and higher powers. We’ll think about Manning’s Bucolics in conversation with a long lineage of farming verse, ranging from Virgil to Wendell Berry.
Join FFI Director Leah Bayens in the actual pasture of clover as we pronounce lines like this: “you toss the stars like clover seed / you sling them through the sky you must / be glad to be a sower Boss…”
Course Fee: $50
Fee includes: a copy of Manning’s Bucolics book, a TBC Farm walk with poetry readings, a facilitated discussion and reading guide by FFI Director Leah Bayens, admission to the Bucolics Project concert & poetry reading
