Friends,

We are pleased to share with you our latest publication, The Berry Center’s 2024 Annual Journal – Volume Seven. This year’s journal continues our commitment to thoughtful reflection and meaningful dialogue about agrarianism and the connections between land, community, and culture.

The Berry Center Journal 2024 offers a heartfelt narrative on the future of sustainable agriculture and rural renewal. In “How Will We Get the People Back?”, Mary Berry reflects on the collapse of Kentucky’s small farms after the tobacco program ended and emphasizes the urgent need to restore agricultural diversity. Wendell Berry, in “Wheeler Catlett Goes to Washington”, recounts the story of an advocate navigating the complexities of agricultural policy, while his poem “A Small Porch in the Woods” invites readers to find wisdom and solace in nature.

Maurice Manning’s “Planting Trees in God’s Country” celebrates the spiritual and communal connection to land stewardship, and Alan Guebert, in “American Farms: Bigger and Grayer”, addresses the challenges of farm consolidation and an aging farmer population, urging for the support of younger generations. Together, these pieces highlight the importance of preserving agrarian values, supporting small farmers, and nurturing the bond between people and the land.
